Almost 60 GW of renewable energy projects acquired in the first half of 2023

IIn the first half of 2023, 130 transactions of renewable energy projects with a total capacity of almost 60 GW were concluded in Europe, according to the Insiders Deal report of Tevali Partners. More than 15 GW of solar projects changed hands, and even more energy storage battery projects (16.1 GW). The rest refers to wind farms (23.6 GW) and a minor part to other projects.

The biggest number of transactions were completed in Spain (22), the United Kingdom (20) and Germany (19). In terms of capacity, the most was sold in the UK (12.6 GW), and almost half of this refers to RWA's acquisition of solar and battery storage projects with a total capacity of 6.1 GW, from JBM Solar.

Investors' trust in renewable energy is confirmed by the fact that more than half of all these acquisitions (53.7%) are new, 'greenfield' projects. Most transactions were in the category up to 50 MW, followed by the category from 51 to 150 MW, where 71% of all acquisitions were solar power plants.

One of the biggest acquisitions in the PV sector in Germany in the first half of 2023 was MAX Solar's acquisition of 3.1 GW of projects from SEAC Group. By finalizing this deal, MAX Solar increased its portfolio to 6.5 GW and became one of the largest solar developers in Germany. Of the larger takeovers in Germany, it is also worth mentioning the acquisition by which Green FOX Energy took over 1.5 GW of solar projects from ON Energy and EDF Renewables' acquisition of 17 greenfield solar PV projects with a capacity of 529 MW, from MEC Group.
